Meijer: Transforming In-Store Fulfillment Through Custom-Engineered Wayfinding Solutions

Store shelves stocked with soft drink cases beneath aisle signs labeled L3 and L4.

Challenge

With the significant increase in demand for BOPIS, Meijer needed a solution to maximize efficiency—because knowing which aisles products are located on is only the beginning of fulfilling orders.

Solution

We prototyped inconspicuous wayfinders to be installed throughout each store to catalog specific section locations within its aisles, allowing for quick and accurate pinpointing of ordered items.

After considering a few material options at various price points, we selected Sintra board; this durable, lightweight PVC material can be directly printed on, heat-formed, and doesn’t need adhesive or magnets for installation.

Our experts then value-engineered the production to be handled completely in-house, giving us and Meijer complete control over the timeline and quality of the finished assets.

Results

With 263 locations, this expansive project involved the creation of over 238,000 elements. Piloting in 60+ locations, Meijer’s wayfinders are providing the team with warehouse-level efficiency without interfering with the well-honed traditional in-store shopping experience.

With this customized solution in place, they have successfully pivoted to be faster and more accurate when it comes to meeting their customers’ evolving demands for shopping convenience.
